Big Data and Analytics

This research area addresses the challenge of making sense of the vast amount of data generated by the ubiquitous, heterogeneous information technology systems of our society. The cluster will develop university-wide data analytics capabilities by leveraging state-of-the-art data analytics and visualization technologies. The cluster is focused on discovering trustworthy knowledge from big data to support informed decisions for teaching, research and regional economic development.

Short Term Goals

  • Establish high-performance computing and storage capacity for efficient analysis and innovative visualization of big data
  • Create a collision space for ECU researchers and external stakeholders to analyze and view big data in real time
  • Design machine learning algorithms to help health care providers predict patient outcomes including emergency room visits and hospital ready missions

Long Term Goals

  • Combine big data analytics and health sciences to improve care quality, prevent medical errors, increase care process efficiency and reduce costs
  • Become self-sustainable by attracting external grants to support data analytics project led by ECU investigators
  • Develop collaborative relationships with major partners including SAS, RTI, Vidant Health and others to create strong social capital


Research Approaches

  • House, analyze and visualize big data that supports rural-based companies, industries and communities to drive economic development
  • Construct a collision space for up to 50 participants with a 270-degree immersive visualization hub
  • Establish a research team of multidisciplinary faculty across campus to solve research or practical problems by using big data and analytics
