Summer Camp Program Assistant
Wayne County Library
Public Service Fellows Program Overview
The Public Service Fellows (PSF) Program began in 2014 with support from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation. Since its inception, over 200 students have completed internships in 85 organizations in 25 North Carolina counties. The goal of the program is to foster workplace experiences for undergraduates at ECU while helping rural communities build professional capacity to address public issues.
Up to 20 students will be chosen each year for SECU Public Fellow Internships (PFI). PFI participants will take part in 20 hours of leadership and professional development workshops in addition to the 330-hour PFI internship experience. Each student selected for the program will receive $17.50 per hour.
Students will be expected to attend a MANDATORY orientation on May 15, 2026, attend workshops scheduled throughout their internship, and at the end of their internship, and present at a State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board meeting either in summer or fall.
Position Summary
Our library system is planning to host a summer camp for tweens focusing on Civics Education. This would take place in the late July/early August timeframe and would be 5 days long. Each day we would focus on a different aspect of government to give students a firm understanding of how the different levels of government operate and how different departments and divisions work. The students would work on a hands-on project and the last day would be a presentation/celebration of their work. We would invite a variety of elected officials to explain their roles and potentially take a few short field trips to visit different governmental entities. The student would take an active role in helping to plan, coordinate, market, recruit for, and implement the camp. In addition, there is the possibility of a side research project on civics-related matters with our Local History department. The work would take place during normal business hours (8:30-5:30pm), but as our library stays open to the public until 8 several days of the week, work could be done outside these hours if necessary.
