Public Service Fellows Program Overview

The Public Service Fellows (PSF) Program began in 2014 with support from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation. Since its inception, over 200 students have completed internships in 85 organizations in 25 North Carolina counties. The goal of the program is to foster workplace experiences for undergraduates at ECU while helping rural communities build professional capacity to address public issues.

Up to 20 students will be chosen each year for SECU Public Fellow Internships (PFI). PFI participants will take part in 20 hours of leadership and professional development workshops in addition to the 330-hour PFI internship experience. Each student selected for the program will receive $17.50 per hour.

Students will be expected to attend a MANDATORY orientation on May 15, 2026, attend workshops scheduled throughout their internship, and at the end of their internship, and present at a State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board meeting either in summer or fall.


Position Summary

The Case Management Intern will support the case management team in providing essential services to homeless or at-risk teens that are residents in our group home. The intern will gain hands-on experience in case management, client advocacy, and social service delivery.

Key responsibilities will include assisting case managers in conducting intake assessments and creating personalized service plans for youth residents, maintaining accurate and up to date files, notes and other documentation, ensure confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations, identify and refer clients to community resources, support case managers in facilitating individual counseling sessions and group activities, assist in tracking client progress, observe and assist in crisis situations, participate in case management team meetings, client reviews and other decision making processes, and support efforts to raise awareness about the shelter’s services and engage in community-building activities.

The student will work directly with Alexis Kelly, CEO. Kelly Center of Hope is located at 300 E 10th Street, Washington. impact in society. This internship will be hybrid – mostly face to face with some virtual working days.

 

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Strong interest in working with teens that are homeless, at-risk, or who have aged out of foster care. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Empathy, compassion, and a nonjudgmental approach toward individuals from diverse backgrounds.  Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.  Must pass background check and any other required screenings.

All students selected for the PFI program must have undergraduate status and meet the following eligibility requirements by the internship start date:

  • North Carolina resident
  • Good academic standing
  • Completion of at least 60 semester credit hours (classified as upcoming Junior or Senior)
  • Not graduating prior to the internship end date
