2018 National Postdoc Appreciation Week

The National Postdoctoral Association is pleased to announce the ninth annual celebration of National Postdoc Appreciation Week from Sept. 17-21, 2018. In honor of this week, ECU will host several events honoring its postdoc scholars.

Postdoc Mixer

Thursday, Sept. 20; 4 p.m.; 2W-38/40A/40B Brody

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs invites you to attend an event in recognition of the 2018 National Postdoc Appreciation Week to acknowledge the contributions of our ECU postdoctoral scholars and their importance to our research community. Postdocs, their mentors and families, have been invited for a brief program and mixer.ECU postdoctoral scholar activities and research accomplishments for the past year will be highlighted, ECU’s Outstanding Paper award winner will be announced, and refreshments with heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided. Please RSVP via Outlook so that we are able to place an accurate refreshment order.

NPAW Visiting Speaker

As our NPAW visiting speaker for the day, we have invited Dr. Tracy Costello. Dr. Costello is chair of the Board of Directors of the National Postdoctoral Association and Director of Postdoctoral Affairs at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa, Fla.. She earned her doctorate in biomathematics & biostatistics and human & molecular genetics – funded in part by an R25 predoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention – from the University of Texas MD Anderson UT Health Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston. Her recent editorial in Science can be found here online.

Other NPAW Events

  • 1 p.m.: Dr. Costello will be presenting an open session, “Mentoring the Next Generation of Postdoctoral Scholars.”
  • 2:30 p.m.: Postdoctoral scholars will attend a hands-on seminar and workshop, “Networking Success Secrets,” where they will engage in interactive activities to:
    • Understand that building a network is about building relationships
    • How to start a conversation and engage in small talk
    • Master a perfect handshake
    • Create a 5-word introduction
    • Construct a 30-second elevator pitch
    • Leverage social media to build their network

2017 National Postdoc Appreciation Week

ECU hosted events in recognition of the 2017 National Postdoctoral Scholar Appreciation Week.

The following events were held in honor of the ECU postdocs:

  • September 18: Postdoctoral scholars were invited to a meet and greet luncheon with Dr. Jay Golden, vice chancellor for research, economic development and engagement. This opportunity allowed the scholars to share their work with Dr. Golden and for Dr. Golden to share his research vision for ECU. Six postdoctoral scholars were given opportunities to present their research.
  • September 19: Dr. Phil Clifford, a professor and associate dean for research at the University of Illinois, was invited to campus to share information on career and professional development for Ph.D. scientists.
    • “Getting Started on the Right Foot”, 1 p.m.: Dr. Clifford presented a session targeted toward faculty who mentor postdocs and graduate students which focused on mentor/mentee communication. The interacted workshop used studies from mentor training sessions conducted at the University of Illinois and the National Research Mentoring Network.
    • “Putting your Ph.D. Degree to Work”, 3 p.m.: Postdoctoral scholars were invited for a hands-on workshop where they completed a first draft of their individual development plan. Individual development plans are now required by the NIH and other sponsors, including the National Postdoctoral Association and ECU’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.
    • Postdoc Appreciation, 5 p.m.: ECU postdoctoral scholars’ research accomplishments from the past year were highlighted and a dinner was provided for scholars, scholars’ families, mentors and honored guests.
