PSF Internship Profile: Hannah Tripp

Name: Hannah Tripp
Major: Communication
Internship Site: Pirate’s Cove Billfish Tournament

How did you hear about the SECU Public Service Fellows internship program and why were you interested in being a part of the program?
I heard about this internship when a professor sent out an e-mail with this opportunity. I was interested in this program because it sounded like a good opportunity that I would like to try.

Why were you interested in your internship site? What drew you to your site?
I was interested in this site because it was somewhere I have never been and it would put me out of my comfort zone. I also enjoy being near the beach in the summer and it gives me experience similar to event planning.

What are some of your daily tasks/major projects that you’ve worked on this summer during your internship?
Some of my daily tasks for the internship included putting together the prizes and auction items for the tournament, mailing documents to the participants and organizing what we have so far. There are a bunch of small tasks daily that go into putting it all together.

What’s been your favorite part of your internship?
My favorite part has been getting to explore Manteo and connecting with all of the businesses that sponsor and cater the tournament. I have met a lot of people so far.

How have you seen yourself grow or your skills improve during your internship?
I have grown in my organization skills so far in the internship, and I expect to grow more during the actual tournament.

How do you believe your site benefits through your internship?
I think it benefits my site supervisor to have an intern because I can work on things for her while she does things she can only work on. It makes it easier for her if I can run errands that she doesn’t have to.

Do you have any plans to continue in this type of work after your internship?
After this internship I may want to pursue some kind of event planning work, but I am open to working in public relations.

How do you believe you’ve improved the lives of local community members through your internship? If so, how?
I think during the tournament I will be able to help people attending that have questions or need help with something.

What advice would you give students that are interested in participating in the PSF internship program?
I would encourage them to apply and stay open about which internship they may end up with. I would tell them to be themselves try everything they can because it will help them grow in their skills.
