2020 SECU Public Fellows Internship Program Job Descriptions

The Public Service Fellows (PSF) Program began in 2014 with support from the State Employees Credit Union (SECU) Foundation. Since its inception, 101 undergraduate students have completed internships with 58 organizations located in 14 North Carolina counties. The goal of the program is to foster workplace experiences for undergraduates at ECU while helping rural communities build professional capacity to address public issues.

Up to 20 students will be chosen each year for SECU Public Fellow Internships (PFI). Program participants will take part in 20 hours of leadership and professional development workshops in addition to the 330-hour PFI internship experience. Each student selected for the program receives a stipend of $4,500.

Students are expected to attend a virtual orientation, attend scheduled workshops during the semester, and will be required to present at an SECU advisory board meeting or record a presentation for an SECU advisory board meeting.

Aug. 10 through Nov. 13, 2020

Application Process

Applicants must complete a PFI application and submit a resume to be considered. Applications are available online.

All students selected for the PFI program must have undergraduate status and meet the following eligibility requirements by the internship start date:

  • North Carolina resident;
  • 3.0 GPA or higher in major field of study; and
  • Completion of at least 60 semester credit hours.

AMEXCAN Program Coordinator


Position Summary

The intern will work virtually as a program coordinator to develop, implement and evaluate existing programs, events and initiatives for AMEXCAN. They will work with others at AMEXCAN to develop new programs and work on building community capacity around health, advocacy, education and culture.

AMEXCAN is a nonprofit organization that offers various educational programs including English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, enrichment programs for school age children, 4-H activities, public health education, and sessions on higher education and planning.

Ayden Chamber of Commerce Intern


Position Summary

The intern, under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Ayden Chamber of Commerce, will have the opportunity to complete the Ayden relocation guide, inventory of all properties in the business district, work on a membership drive, help with a new incubator space, organize the chamber banquet, and help with other tasks as needed.

The Ayden Chamber of Commerce exists to serve the businesses and community of Ayden, N.C. The chamber has an 11-member board and one part-time employee. Beaufort County Economic Development Intern


Position Summary

The intern will work virtually with the Beaufort County Economic Development Director to help recruit, retain and expand business operation in the county through the development of technical data and its distribution through web-based and social media. Research activities will include web searches, interaction with local, state and federal officials, and interviews of local businesses and organizations.

Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce Intern


Position Summary

The intern will be under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce. The student will be able to not only attend, but will participate in discussions and planning that occurs at chamber meetings. The intern will not work outside of work schedule, except for a couple occasions which are planned out. The intern will also be responsible for completing administrative tasks.

The chamber is committed to representing and advocating business interests, promoting economic growth, providing leadership in community affairs, enhancing the quality of life for the people of Bertie County. Our membership consists of 100 businesses, 25 nonprofits, associations or agencies and a like number of individual members totaling around 150 members in all. The chamber hosts events for the Town of Windsor, such as the Sage Festival, Freedom Fireworks, and Christmas Parade, as well as hosting business after hours, lunch and learns, and other meetings to promote business interests. Its goal is to unite its community to make our home a better place for its businesses and citizens.

Chowan County Local Government Intern


Position Summary

The intern has the unique experience of working closely with three different organizations, collaborating and working together toward furthering the growth of the Chowan County community. The intern will gain robust knowledge of the inner workings of tourism, the chamber of commerce, and economic development. They will learn the difference in a unit of local government, a nonprofit, and a public/private economic development organization. The intern will compile information and data, update data bases, and assist with special projects as needed.

Murfreesboro Chamber of Commerce Intern


Position Summary

The intern will work on a project of the chamber in coordination with the Town of Murfreesboro, Mayors Task Force. The task force is working on a project brought on by a recommendation from the Construction Professionals Network Institute, Inc. This project is seeking grant funds to improve pedestrian safety in Murfreesboro. The intern will also work with the Chamber in preparation of the upcoming Christmas Parade, Historical Committee Candlelight Tour, and other events. This will involve marketing, including newspaper and radio interviews, planning and asset securing, organizing event schedules and coordination with local law enforcement and others. The intern will also assist with the setup of a newly obtained desktop computer and the transfer of files from the old computer, including email lists, files and documents, and transition to a cloud-based storage for newly created files.

Interfaith Refugee Volunteer Coordinator


Position Summary

The intern will be tasked with recruiting and managing volunteers, while also developing virtual learning programs and teaching plans for refugees. The volunteers will be recruited through a variety of media – newspapers, church bulletins, calls to civic groups, and social media. Interns will also interview prospective volunteers. Once appropriately trained, the intern will hold monthly meetings to inform and educate volunteers and potential volunteers about refugees and the needs of this program. The intern will also be responsible for coordinating volunteers for special events and assisting at these events.

Interfaith Refugee Ministry is dedicated to helping refugees rebuild their lives in eastern North Carolina by assisting with the basic necessities when they first arrive in New Bern and surrounding areas. The ultimate goal is to help refugees become self-reliant, emotionally secure, and culturally adjusted in their new home. Each year, Interfaith Refugee Ministry resettles new refugee families from around the world. NC CIVIL Family Engagement Coordinator Assistant


Position Summary

This internship serves at the NC CIVIL Outreach Office in West Greenville and operates at the center of community organizing, aimed at bringing local agencies, organizations, and community residents together to improve coordination of services and connect residents to resources. Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft Art Administration Intern


Position Summary

The Art Administration intern will provide intensive support for Pocosin Arts Online Craft Programs. The intern will work with the Program Director to implement Zoom craft workshops and classes that include ceramics, metalsmithing, painting, mixed media, and digital design/fabrication for youth and adults. Chowan County Planning Intern


Position Summary

The intern would be responsible for helping merge the recently adopted Land Use Plan with the current County Development Codes for consistency. The Intern would also help to revise and provide amendments to the County Development Codes with regard to the new Chapter 160D General Statutes.

East Carolina Vocational Center Manufacturing Engineer Intern


Position Summary

Coastal Policy and Restoration Intern


Position Summary

The intern will work with North Carolina Coastal Federation’s staff to apply research, analytical and professional writing skills to coastal management issues. The intern will be assigned a project and mentored remotely by a federation staff member.

READ ENC Internship


Position Summary

The intern will assist READ ENC’s executive director in the regular work of our community literacy coalition. This involves a variety of community activities, including servicing little libraries and book nooks throughout Pitt County, as well as maintaining READ ENC’s online presence (website, COVID-19 resources and Facebook page). Additionally, this fall we hope to launch a READ public awareness campaign, which will involve recruiting key community members for a poster/digital image campaign to be developed using ALA’s READ Design Studio. READ ENC is in the process of purchasing ALA’s READ Design Studio software for this campaign and the intern would collaborate with READ ENC’s Executive Director to identify community members, request their participation, take/gather pictures, and create posters/digital images. A second initiative will be to continue to identify and recognize community members as READ ENC Reading Champions, those who are investing exceptional effort into improving children’s language and literacy (birth through third grade).

Turange Theatre Intern


Position Summary

The intern will be involved in development of online subscription program, two reader theatre productions of a teen performance of a Halloween production and A Christmas Carol, outreach strategies for productions, development of an outdoor theatrical productions, theatre memorabilia and costume museum, and will participate in the set up and implementation of events.

The Arts of the Pamlico is a vibrant hub of arts and culture, headquartered in its Historic Turnage Theatre on Main Street in downtown Washington, N.C. The artplex is 32,000 square feet, hosts events, performances, art galleries, a theatre memorabilia museum, costume museum, a bakery, a catering kitchen, a fully restored palace style theatre, a full stage and large maker space with a recording studio, costume shoppe, dressing rooms, pottery area and an unrestored Vaudeville era theatre on the second and third floors above the front building.

Arts of the Pamlico, Historic Turnage Theatre, is located at 150 West Main Street, Washington. The intern will report to Debra Torrence, executive director. Washington County Intern


Position Summary

The intern will primarily assist with the implementation of the first Citizen’s Academy. They will work with and interview the participating department heads on the presentations that will feature services their respective department provides as well as work on an interactive activity that would further educate participants. The intern will work with finance on the creation of graphics to present with budget updates to the commissioners at their meetings. The desired outcome will include a completed Citizen’s Academy and Citizen’s Academy binder which the intern will then assist with facilitating and presenting the outcome to the Board of County Commissioners. The Citizen’s Academy will serve as a free educational course to citizens of Washington County to learn about the county structure and the different services the county provides. Additionally, they would have the chance to work with Finance and the County Manager to make graphics to be included in the monthly board package to the Board of County Commissioners.

The county encompasses the municipalities of Plymouth, Creswell and Roper, as well as a few unincorporated areas such as the Pea Ridge Sound. Entrepreneurial Program Development Intern


Position Summary

In Fall 2020, Wayne County Public Library will deliver a project to benefit aspiring entrepreneurs in Wayne County. This project’s goal is to advance equity and community economic health by increasing e-commerce support for all entrepreneurs, particularly those who have been underrepresented in entrepreneurship: women, people of color, immigrants, and veterans. The intern will support the library with developing a syllabus and offer support with evaluating strategies to complete this project virtually. Since digital tools and resources will be needed, the student intern will provide best practices on educational opportunities and basic business planning to include an entrepreneurial mindset. The student intern will also be responsible for working with community partners and recruiting presenters for this project. As the library looks at projected outcomes it will provide educational opportunities, digital tools and resources, a space for exploration, innovation, and imaginative risk taking to aspiring entrepreneurs interested in using online marketplaces and e-commerce sites in their business model.
