SECU Public Fellows Internship Program

Q. Can I apply for more than one position?

  • Yes please apply for any and all positions that interest you.

Q. Where do I send all of my applications and resume once completed?

Q. What documents are needed to apply?

  • A completed application and most recent copy of your resume. If you can, please merge these documents together and label as last name_first name. If applying for more than one location, name each in the same way but include a 1, 2, 3, etc.

Q. Why do I need a different application for each site?

  • Each site has a different set of skills needed and a different job; therefore, having a site specific application shows how your skills and interests could relate to that position.

Q. Do you have to be majoring in certain areas to apply?

  • No you do not have to be a certain major to apply; however, some positions will work best for certain majors and require skills that are based upon the majors’ core classes.

Q. What are the work hours?

  • Each site will have their own set of hours that will be determined at a meeting prior to the start of the internship. On average, you will work 26 hrs each week for the full 13 weeks to complete on time.

Q. What are the requirements of the internship?

  • You will be required to complete 330 hours of site work within the agreed upon time frame, attend a mandatory orientation, attend virtual and face to face workshops throughout the internship into the end of August, present at an advisory board meeting with the SECU Foundation, write a paper about your experience, and any other presentations or meetings required through your specific internship or by the Foundation if requested.

Q. Do I need a vehicle to commute?

  • Each job description should list whether it is hybrid or in-person. If hybrid, you will be required to commute to the site on occasion but not daily. In-person means you will need to be on site each day and will need a reliable source of transportation to get there.

Q. Is there a travel allowance?

  • There is no additional funding for travel through ECU outside of the stipend you will receive for the internship.

Q. Is there a housing assistance or allowance for sites not in Greenville?

  • Supervisors may be able to direct you to low-cost rentals where other students have stayed in the past. Otherwise, there is no additional assistance for housing during the internship.

Q. What if there is a planned family vacation or appointment during the duration of the internship?

  • Most sites are flexible with time off for appointments or vacation if the information is relayed to them early on. The only requirement is that you complete 330 hours within the duration of the internship.

Q. Is orientation virtual or in-person?

  • Orientation is in-person and cannot be completed virtually.

Q. What if I have a conflict for orientation?

  • Orientation is mandatory and will take place from 9AM-4PM. All interns will be required to attend in person.

Q. When can I expect to hear back about a job?

  • Interviews will begin shortly after the recruitment period ends. Supervisors will then schedule interviews with you if you are fully eligible. All selections should be made by the middle of April.

Q. What if I applied for several opportunities?

  • Within the PFI program: You will be contacted by each supervisor for an interview. Once interviews for all sites are completed, if selected as candidate of choice, you will be notified of your status.
  • Outside of this program: If you are waiting for updates from the PFI program in order to select another internship, simply reach out to communityengagement@ecu.edu or the program manager Cassie Keel for a status update. Usually, students are notified if they have been selected within a week of all interviews closing out.

Q. Who do I contact if I have questions about any of the processes?
