The SECU Public Fellows Internship Program at ECU connects the university and regional communities through projects that address community-identified priorities. Undergraduate student placements provide opportunities for fellows to develop leadership, analytical, problem solving, communication and project management skills, as well as allowing them to network in professional settings.

Aces for Autism
Position Summary – Program Intern
This role will require a positive personality and the ability to communicate with multiple individuals. The intern will aid in developing and executing communication plans with objectives to share the mission and impact with the community and beyond; maintain and update social media and websites regularly; develop monthly newsletter; organize and assist with community outreach events to include creation of materials for events and assist with creation of marketing materials. The intern must maintain all confidentiality and privacy policies, follow all healthcare confidentiality guidelines, attend required trainings, fundraisers and events, maintain a professional appearance and representation of Aces for Autism to internal and external stakeholders.
Internship Location & Supervisor Information
Aces for Autism is a not-for-profit treatment and educational center dedicated to empowering families and individuals impacted by autism to experience success from diagnosis through adulthood. Aces for Autism is located at 700 Samuel Robinson Way, Winterville NC 28590. Students will work directly with Kyle Robinson, Founder. Typical work hours will be 8 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday with occasional weeknight or weekend hours for community outreach events.
This will be a fully face to face internship.

Beaufort-Hyde Partnership for Children
Position Summary – Event Planner
The intern selected for this position will assist Beaufort-Hyde Partnership for Children (BHPC) staff in creating and planning upcoming outreach family events for fiscal year 2025-2026 (ie.: Touch-a-Truck, Elfie Kits, Holiday Scavenger Hunt, festivals attended, Go Blue Day – Bubbles and Trucks, etc.) – Plan family supply drives (ie: diaper drive, children’s hat/scarf/glove drive) – Create volunteer packets for BHPC volunteers – Assist with fundraising opportunities – Create flyers, handouts, social media posts, etc., as needed – Aid BHPC staff, as needed, to complete other projects related to programming for children and families
The intern selected to work with BHPC may have an opportunity to join staff members at community partner meetings to build their professional network. Interns often call, email and visit community partners with staff to gain a better understanding of the community, collaborative initiatives, and team building among agencies.

City of Goldsboro
Position Summary – Management Analyst
The Management Analyst for the City of Goldsboro will perform professional work in the preparation and administration of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and strategic plan during the budgeting process and in the evaluation of city programs and departmental financials. They would provide consulting and analysis services to the City Manager’s Office (Assistant to the City Manager). They would provide ongoing training to city personnel regarding performance management software. Additionally, they would perform other related projects as assigned.
This internship will position the candidate for leadership positions in local government, community development, finance, and budget. Students will have the opportunity to leverage their experiences to pursue leadership roles in industry, corporate settings, and local government. This hands-on experience has helped previous graduates secure jobs and internships after graduation.
Internship Location & Supervisor Information
The City Manager’s Office conducts the overall administration of the City as prescribed by the North Carolina General Statutes, coordinates all activities, and carries out all policies and actions of the City Council. The City Manager’s staff has incorporated its CIP and strategic plan in the budgeting process. The CIP outlines the high-priority projects recommended for funding, while the strategic plan defines the key metrics necessary to achieve the Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals set by our elected officials. Our mission statement is “the city provides services, promotes equality, and protects the well-being of all residents and visitors to enhance our quality of life every day”.

City of New Bern
Position Summary – Information Technology Analyst
The student selected for this internship will perform technical work in the review and analysis of current processes and procedures related to business continuity and incident response to ensure that processes are current and meet our needs and industry standards. Day-to-day tasks will include reviewing our existing business continuity plans and working with the various departments within the organization to identify and implement needed changes and developing plans for how we will continue to operate while we recover from a major event, reviewing our existing Incident Response Plan and working with members of the Information Technology Department to identify and implement needed changes and processes to support the plan. The intern may also assist in the analysis to identify opportunities for beneficial business process reengineering via the introduction or upgrading of information technology systems and services. Assist in the implementation of system designs which meet documented technical, functional and budgetary requirements. Work with IT personnel to document system vulnerabilities and security threats and develop procedural mechanisms to mitigate the risks down to an acceptable level.
Internship Location & Supervisor Information
The IT Division provides support for desktop applications, computing resources, networking, telephony, cybersecurity, video, and related systems for the City of New Bern. This includes traditional computing infrastructure such as a virtual server farm, city-wide data network, desktop and laptop computers, and tablets. In addition, we support the City’s Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone system, Public, Educational and Government (PEG) television station, a growing network of building security cameras, electronic building access controls, audio visual systems for the City’s conference rooms and Emergency Operations Center, and the data communications network.

Position Summary – Digital Marketing Assistant
A Digital Marketing Assistant with the Eastern Carolina Vocational Center (ECVC) will gain practical experience in a nonprofit company setting that sells products and services. The student will have potential networking opportunities with the Chamber of Commerce and local employers, as well as different internal ECVC departments. Duties of the internship can be modified depending on student’s major.

Emerge Gallery & Art Center
Position Summary – Marketing Assistant
The Marketing Assistant will work with our Marketing & Exhibits Director to help with the promotional material and marketing plans for Emerge Gallery & Art Center, Home of the Pitt County Arts Council, and help with countywide promotion of the arts. Intern may also be responsible for helping work the front desk and help with programming that occurs at Emerge as an assistant. Position Summary – Managing Consultant and Counselor
This experience will give the student an opportunity to experience building an organization from the ground up, but also the importance of relationship management and business development. Kelly Children’s Home
Position Summary – Case Management Intern
The Case Management Intern will support the case management team in providing essential services to homeless or at-risk teens residing at the group home facility. The intern will gain hands-on experience in case management, client advocacy, and social service delivery. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the well-being and stability of vulnerable young people while developing professional skills in the field of social work, counseling, and human services.
Key responsibilities include supporting case managers with conducting intake assessments and developing personalized service plans for youth residents, maintaining accurate and up-to-date client files, notes, and documentation while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with privacy regulations. Position Summary – Assistant to the Executive Director
The student intern will be working directly with the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce on several projects, including but not limited to; preparing materials to petition the Town Council to consider installing electric vehicle charging stations, preparing, and planning for the NC Watermelon Festival, meeting with the Hertford County Economic Director to stay abreast of economic opportunities for Murfreesboro, appearing on local radio programs, and other marketing opportunities. The student intern will assist in the daily social media posts, respond to voice mail and email communication, and also assist with computer based marketing programs. The intern will assist in planning the annual banquet. This position will require meetings and discussions with local elected officials, local business partners, and others involved. This intern will use their knowledge of the internet, social media, and other applications. The Executive Director will mentor the intern regarding all the above. This position is based at the Chamber Office in Murfreesboro, but most of the time will be spent out in the community. NC Coastal Federation
Position Summary – Coastal Federation and Outreach Intern
The Coastal Restoration & Outreach Intern for The North Carolina Coastal Federation will participate in a hands-on program that provides outdoor opportunities for habitat and water quality restoration. Whether it’s planting a living shoreline, bagging oyster shells for habitat, or maintaining a rain garden to reduce polluted stormwater runoff, the mix of field and outreach-based opportunities provides a multitude of memorable experiences. A key part of our internship includes guest presentations and site visits with local, state, and federal officials, private industry, other nonprofits and academia such as three local university marine labs, and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration facility. The student will have an opportunity to participate in Coastal Federation stakeholder meetings. Through these meetings and workshops, they will have opportunities to network with other professionals in the field.
Internship Objectives include:
- Learn about important coastal environmental issues and the key priority goals of the Coastal Federation.
- Experience the natural coast and understand the Coastal Federation’s protection and restoration work by engaging in a variety of field projects and site visits.
- Work alongside the Coastal Federation’s Education Coordinator to educate community and student groups about coastal stewardship.
- Learn key steps for managing and operating a nonprofit (membership and board development, use of volunteers, staffing, accounting, grant writing, and communications).
- Collaborate on key coastal issues to help advance the work of the Coastal Federation by working with fellow interns on group assignments.

The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a member-supported nonprofit environmental organization committed to protecting and restoring the North Carolina coast. The student will work directly with Rachel Bisesi, Coastal Education Coordinator.
The North Carolina Coastal Federation is located at 3609 HWY 24, Newport, NC 28570. This internship will be fully face to face on site. Interns will spend 12 weeks of the summer working alongside staff in our headquarters office, located in Ocean, NC (near Newport).
Temporary, long term rental options are available at market rate. Student should expect to commute to the site more than three times a week.

North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
Position Summary – Public Marine Education and Evaluation Intern
The Public Marine Education and Evaluation Intern for the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island will observe, teach, and evaluate onsite programs including auditorium programs, outdoor programs, and floor programs. They will use virtual and onsite training to learn more about the principles of interpretation and resident species. They will provide interpretation and customer service at several stations around the Aquarium including the Touch Pools and animal habitats. They will research, complete, and present a project with guidance from staff and supervisors in the public programs department, and assist with other programs as needed. The student will have the opportunity to build personal and community leadership skills through the final project proposal/presentation, daily program presentations, and weekly education meetings.

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of our aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining, and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences, and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats. The student will work directly with Cameron Wescott, Public Programs Educator.
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is located at 374 Airport Road, Manteo, NC 27954. This internship will be fully face to face on site. The intern’s work schedule will primarily be Tuesday through Saturday with possible variations or holiday assignments. The intern should expect to commute more than three times per week to the site.
Housing is limited in the Outer Banks. There is a local dorm-style housing building as a potential housing option. We also encourage interns to research housing options online and sometimes our active volunteers have rooms available for rent.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
The ideal candidate for this position will be comfortable talking to people of all ages and backgrounds conversationally and in presentations and have an interest in marine animals and education. Intern must be willing to facilitate educational evaluation methods. Knowledge of marine animals and ecosystems, biology, or environmental science is a plus but not required. Experience teaching in informal settings is a plus but not required.

Position Summary – Marketing Intern
The Marketing Intern will assist in a wide range of projects that benefit the mission and vision of Ronald McDonald House. The selected individual will report to the Marketing and Communications Manager. The intern will gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of marketing and communications while also gaining a high level of knowledge on how a non-profit organization operates. The intern will assist in the development of creative marketing strategies to promote the work of RMH, assist with updating the RMH social media outlets and website, assist in creating messages to reach new audiences using multiple media outlets and creating short videos for social media, assist in promoting volunteer opportunities, assist with event support, serve as brand as a RMH brand ambassador by representing the organization at community tabling events and other general duties as needed

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern North Carolina is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides a temporary home, support, and access to medical care for families of children receiving treatment from area medical facilities. Our houses offer physical comforts and emotional support designed to promote the whole family’s well-being. These Houses not only keep families close when they need each other most but increase the ability for families to spend more time with their child, interact with their clinical care team, and participate in critical medical care decisions.
The student will work directly with Grace Faller, Marketing and Communications Manager. The RMHC of Eastern North Carolina is located at 529 Moye Blvd. Greenville, NC 27834. This internship will be fully face to face.

Sound Rivers
Position Summary – Water Quality Intern
The focus of the Water Quality Internship at Sound Rivers is our water-quality testing program, Swim Guide which provides important data to folks throughout the watershed so they can make informed decisions while recreating on the water throughout the summer. The data collected also provides important insight into the health of our waterways and allows us to investigate issues in our watersheds. In this role, the intern will be responsible for communicating with our amazing Sound Rivers volunteers, collecting and processing water samples, and assisting with sharing that data with the public. In addition to our Swim Guide program, interns are encouraged and supported to explore all aspects of our organization. Through the Sound Rivers internship, students will gain valuable experience in volunteer coordination, leadership, problem-solving, and advocacy. Sound Rivers works closely with many organizations and local governments throughout the watersheds, creating fantastic opportunities for connections throughout North Carolina.

Sound Rivers’ mission is to monitor and protect the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds, protecting the health and beauty of the river basins, and the health of the communities that rely on them. Sound Rivers is committed to environmental justice and equity for all people in our watersheds. Since Sound Rivers covers both the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds (about 12,635 square miles or nearly a quarter of the state), this internship does require a certain amount of driving. Gas will be compensated, and there are work vehicles you are welcome to use when available. When you are not driving, you will be spending your time enjoying eastern North Carolina’s beautiful waterways. The internship takes place on weekdays during typical business hours, with opportunities to participate in some weekend events if interested. Internships are available at each of our three offices, located in Washington, New Bern, and Raleigh. Please indicate which office you are interested in working out of in your application.
The student will work directly with Emily Fritz, Volunteer Coordinator. The Sound Rivers office is located at 108 Gladden Street, Washington, NC 27889. This internship will be hybrid, mostly face to face with some virtual working days. The student will be required to commute to the site two to three days a week.

Strategic Twin-Counties Education Partnership (STEP)
Position Summary – Work-Based Learning Liaison Assistant
The Learning Liaison Assistant will assist in coordinating career awareness activities such as guest speaker sessions, job shadowing, mock interviews, field trips, mentorship programs, and company tours. The intern will assist in organizing and executing events, provide support to employers and facilitate the Apprenticeship NC process, conduct initial worksite visits, continue ongoing monitoring during the work experience, and follow-up placement visits to include the recruitment and interview process for on-the-job training experience placements.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park
Position Summary – Education and Avian Husbandry Assistant
The Education and Avian Husbandry Assistant will be responsible for helping coordinate the summer programs that Sylvan Heights hosts during the summer. The intern will assist in daily set-up and break down for educational programs, assisting with daily educational programs as needed, and providing support to the avian husbandry staff. The individual will also supervise high school volunteers assisting with summer day camps. The intern will gain great experience with coordinating major events as well as communication skills with the fellow staff as well as the many visitors and attendees of the camp.

Sylvan Heights Bird Park seeks to advance conservation of waterfowl and wetlands, to act as a local educational resource for avian biology and wetlands ecology, and to serve as an international center for avicultural training and research. Sylvan Heights is home to breeding populations of some of the world’s rarest waterfowl. In some cases, fewer than 250 individuals of these species remain in the wild, and the collaborative captive breeding programs taking place here may be their last barrier against extinction. The Park also plays host to many youth groups as a field trip destination. Over 20,000 students from across the state participate in educational programs at Sylvan Heights with the peak of students visiting between March and July.
The student will directly work with Dustin Foote, General Curator. The site is located at 500 Sylvan Heights Parkway, Scotland Neck, NC. Typical work hours are 8:00am-5:00pm, with weekend or evening work as needed. This will be a fully face to face internship.

Washington County Government
Position Summary – County Management Intern
The County Management Intern will be embedded within and work closely with all staff within the Washington County Manager’s Office (CMO) which has a proven track record of successfully hosting and coaching Interns and Graduate Fellows. Traditionally the CMO assess the chosen intern’s skills and talents and develops a mutually agreeable work plan to provide the intern with desirable exposure to and experience working on projects or within departmental areas of interest, which are also areas of need for additional management resources for the County. Ideally the Management Intern will be able to work over a broad array of departments and projects throughout the internship to develop their personal experience and understanding about the scope of various services offered and managed by county governments in North Carolina. The intern will spend the first two weeks getting to know the county, the strategic plan and the position before developing a plan and project for the summer.

The County Manager serves as the county budget officer, personnel officer, and chief administrative officer for the county. The manager is responsible for all daily operations activities of the county, for all capital projects, and the development of the annual county budget. The Washington County Manager also serves in a somewhat unusual dual appointed role capacity as the County Attorney. The manager/attorney advises the Board of Commissioners on all issues that affect the county and its operations, including legislation and legal matters. The manager/attorney drafts local ordinances and policies and is responsible for the implementation of each. Typical hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 5:00PM but flexible scheduling including virtual/remote work is possible.
