PSF Internship Profile: Jalyn Mills

Name: Jalyn Mills
Major: Public Health Studies
Internship Site: Pitt County Health Department

How did you hear about the SECU Public Service Fellows internship program and why were you interested in being a part of the program?
I heard about the SECU Public Service Fellows Internship Program through my major department’s Facebook page. I was interested in becoming a SECU Public Service Fellow due to my involvement in the community and experience public service within my major.

Why were you interested in your internship site? What drew you to your site?
As a public health studies major, I thought it was a great opportunity to intern with the Pitt County Health Department. Many of my instructors spoke about the great things the Pitt County Health Department has done for the Pitt County community.

What are some of your daily tasks/major projects that you’ve worked on this summer during your internship?
Some of my daily tasks included preparing materials for the diabetes recruitment events, self-management classes and the support group. I also assisted other supervisors and staff with various tasks. Some of my major projects included my WIC online nutrition education research project, writing an article for the HER Magazine, leading a cooking demonstration for diabetes classes and assisting with WIC Fun Day.

What’s been your favorite part of your internship?
My favorite part of my internship experience was working with community partners. The Pitt County Health Department connects with other community partners including Vidant Health, Food Bank ENC, churches, community members and other stakeholders. I had the opportunity to connect with many individuals in the community.

How have you seen yourself grow or your skills improve during your internship?
Yes; it was not the easiest internship. I had hardships that I learned how to overcome.  My interpersonal skills have improved tremendously. Overall, I have developed the life-long skills and goals to where I want to be in the workforce.

How do you believe your site benefits through your internship?
I was able to display innovative ideas to employees and give them ways to connect with different populations. In addition, I gathered research on online nutrition education programs used by WIC agencies across the country. Pitt County eventually wants to implement an online-based nutrition education program for their participants. After the research, I interviewed various WIC agencies to evaluate the successes and barriers of their implementations.

Do you have any plans to continue in this type of work after your internship?
I will continue to work in the public health field, but in a nonprofit or academic setting. I plan on working with smaller community health organizations to help bring awareness to health disparities among different populations.

How do you believe you’ve improved the lives of local community members through your internship? If so, how?
I believe that I was able to connect very well with local community members and grab their attention with my knowledge. People were willing to listen to what I know about living a healthy life. I think the advice that I gave individuals helped improve their lives in some way.

What advice would you give students that are interested in participating in the PSF internship program?
I will tell students to keep a balance in your life and the internship. Don’t take in more than what you can handle. There will be plenty of opportunities at an internship site to participate in. Choose wisely and remain positive.
