Social work students visit Kansas City

Eight East Carolina University students made the long trek from Greenville to Kansas City, Mo., to take part in the annual Bachelor of Social Work Program.

The 2,400-mile round trip provided students the opportunity to participate in workshops geared toward professional development and trending topics in social work.

“Being able to meet other social work students from around the country has been one of the best things about this this trip,” said Tracey Leonard, one of eight students from the School of Social Work who attended the program.

Joining Leonard were Trevor Blue, Andrew Bracken, Kirby Elmore, Charon Hudson, Gabrielle Karl, Tracy Meaux and Christopher Williams. The students were accompanied by social work faculty members Dr. Brenda Eastman and Dr. Kelley Reinsmith-Jones.

Along with participating in workshops, each of the students volunteered to assist in the operations of the conference, including registration and serving as moderators, while Williams presented results from a qualitative inquiry he completed that examined the treatment needs of working with parents suffering from addiction issues in child welfare.

Students also met recruiters from various graduate-level social work programs around the country and were able to explore future possibilities upon completion of their undergraduate degrees.
