Mentorship

 

The Office of Licensing and Commercialization has an extensive network of mentors that can help advance your innovation. Expertise includes, but is not limited to, business development, investment, insurance reimbursement, drug development, rare and orphan diseases, software engineering, product placement, branding, intellectual property protection, website development, prototyping, agriculture, app development, education, and SBIR/STTR grant writing. Mentorship through the Office of Licensing and Commercialization is limited to faculty and Innovation Ambassadors. Students and friends of ECU that would like mentorship are encouraged to reach out to the Small Business Technology Center or the Miller School of Entrepreneurship.

Mentors that are part of the L&C network have agreed to:

  • Not use any ideas, products or materials that a mentee has, to further their own business or financial interests unless expressly permitted by ECU and mentee; and will maintain the confidentiality (when under a CDA) of all ideas, products or materials that have been entrusted to them by the mentee.
  • Provide at minimum 30 minutes of free mentorship to matching mentees per semester.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal and professional conduct with the mentee at all times.
  • Avoid the intent or appearance of unethical or compromising practice in relationships, actions, and communication

Individuals that have an interest in becoming a mentor are asked to submit the following form and email Dr. Carlyle Rogers to setup a virtual or in-person meeting.

Faculty that request mentorship agree to:

  • Stay within the 30 minute meeting time frame.
  • Understand that mentoring is provided free of charge and is being supplied “As Is” and “As Available” with all faults, and without any warranty of any kind, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties and/or conditions of merchantability, of satisfactory quality, of fitness for a particular purposes, of accuracy, of quiet enjoyment, and or noninfringement of third-party rights.
  • To use active listening.
  • To be conscious of their own levels of competence and experience and to never overstate them.
  • To stay mindful of maintaining objectivity and treat all parties with respect.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal and professional conduct with the mentor.
  • Avoid the intent or appearance of unethical or compromising practice in relationships, actions, and communication.
  • Report any potential issues and/or conflict of interest immediately to the Office of Licensing and Commercialization (Email:rogersar@ecu.edu)

To request a mentor, click on the link below. Following submission of the request, a staff member of the Office of Licensing and Commercialization will email you and make a virtual introduction to your mentor. Mentoring is subject to the number of total requests, topic of request, and availability of mentors.
