Commercialization is not a solo act. It takes teamwork and support from multiple parties to realize success. ECU is fortunate to have numerous internal and external partners that can assist faculty on their innovation journey. Below is a list of partners who work routinely with the Office of Licensing and Commercialization.

 

Business Support

The Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) has helped North Carolina businesses grow and create new jobs since 1984. The SBTDC provides management counseling and educational services to small and mid-sized businesses. Most of the SBTDC services are free of charge, and all are confidential. By providing entrepreneurs with the tools they need to build and grow successful businesses, the SBTDC positively impacts NC’s economy. With a lead center located in Raleigh, NC the SBTDC operates 10 regional service centers in 15 total offices. The SBTDC at ECU serves the counties of Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Edgecombe, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Pamlico, Pitt, Wayne, and Wilson.

Prototyping and Business Support

First Flight Venture Center™ (FFVC) has supported the development and growth of high science, high impact entrepreneurial companies by providing the tailored resources, guidance, connections, and support required for sustained commercial success. Originally developed by the North Carolina Department of Commerce, First Flight was spun out as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation and located in the Research Triangle Park (RTP).

  • Expert assistance in developing non-dilutive funding strategies and grant proposal preparation
  • Rapid prototyping

Biomedical and Healthcare Development

NCBiotech catalyzes the many different transformations which are improving the quality of life around the world in the fields of healthcare and biotechnology. NCBC connects companies with university researchers and introduces entrepreneurs to potential funders. Transformation even happens on an individual level as job seekers find their dream opportunity in the life sciences field.

University Innovation Development and Support
NCInnovation is a statewide nonprofit formed to help translate university research into economic output. The organization recently received $500 million in state funding as an endowment to accelerate the commercialization of research at universities. NCInnovation will deploy the interest earned on the endowment to provide grant funding and wrap-around support services to university researchers. In this way, NCInnovation will support the growth of new businesses and licensing revenue from commercialized research, and help boost economic development in the region. Conflict of Interest

Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) promotes the ethical and responsible conduct of research by guiding the ECU community through the process of transparency, compliance, and oversight. The office does this by reviewing and evaluating disclosures of conflicts of interests and developing conflict of interest management plans.


Copyright

ECU provides faculty, staff, and students access to a Copyright Consultant as a resource on campus to help navigate the often murky waters of Copyright. The Copyright Consultant is available to educate, to empower, and to confidently incorporate Copyrighted materials in your coursework, teaching, and research at ECU. 


Trademark

The ECU Trademark Licensing Office, established in 1984, administers the ECU brand that is derived from a long history of character, determination, pride and purpose which has built ECU into a great university.
