Office of Research Integrity and Compliance
The Office of Research Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) promotes the ethical and responsible conduct of research. We monitor compliance with applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations by developing tools and educational resources designed to help guide the ECU community through the process of transparency, compliance, and oversight.
Ensuring the ethical and responsible conduct of research preserves the public trust, which is an essential underpinning of the University’s ability to fulfill its public service mission.

New: Research Security Certification and Training Requirement
The Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have identified effective dates for Research Security Training.
In consideration of these effective dates, ECU will require the completion of Research Security training in CITI for all PIs, Co-PIs, and other Senior/Key Personnel listed on proposals and subaward proposals to NIH, NSF, and USDA that have sponsor deadlines on or after October 1, 2025 (for DOE, the training requirement went into effect on May 1, 2025).
For NASA, the training requirement will go into effect on August 5, 2026.
National Science Foundation:
As of June 7, 2025, the National Science Foundation (NSF) requires all Principal Investigators (PIs) and co-Principal Investigators (co-PIs) named on NSF awards made on or after May 20, 2024, to annually certify in Research.gov that they are not affiliated with a Malign Foreign Talent Recruitment Program (MFTRP). Individuals involved in an MFTRP are ineligible to serve as senior/key personnel on these awards. NSF is notifying impacted individuals directly of this new requirement.
Find more information about these changes on the Research Security page.
