Postdoc Receives New Investigator Travel Award, Media Attention for Cardiovascular Study

Dr. Syed Anees Ahmed, a pharmacology & toxicology postdoctoral fellow in the Abdel-Rahman Lab at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine, has been honored with the New Investigator Travel Award.

Ahmed presented his research at the Basic Cardiovascular Sciences 2024 Scientific Sessions, held July 22–25, 2024 in Chicago. His work examines the complex relationship between estrogen, alcohol, and heart function. Findings suggest that women undergoing estrogen replacement therapy should be cautious about alcohol consumption due to potential heart health risks.

The research was highlighted in a press release by the American Heart Association and gained national media attention, with coverage from AP News, AOL, and the New York Post. His research also received recognition from major organizations, including the American Heart Association, EurekAlert!, and the Drug and Alcohol Testing Association of Canada.
