Research Summary
Cardiac and skeletal muscle are highly reliant on fatty acid oxidation (FAO) for energy supply as showed by profound alterations in tissue structure, development and function when FAO is impaired. Using a novel mouse model we described, for the first time, that Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 2 (CPT2) deletion in the heart causes metabolic disturbances that lead to cardiac hypertrophy resistant to classical therapeutic interventions like mTORC or deacetylases inhibition. Currently, I am leading a project intended to elucidate how fatty acid oxidation in the skeletal muscle regulates systemic energy balance and confers either susceptibility or protection against obesity and insulin resistance.
