Research Summary
Ron is an indigenous Fijian scholar, born and raised in Fiji (in the South Pacific) with 14 years of experience working with indigenous and local communities across seven countries in the Indo-Pacific region as part of the Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) network. His Masters research was on coral recruitment and settlement on Suva reef in Fiji. His interdisciplinary PhD research in Marine biology looked into the cultural practice of indigenous Fijian funerals in Fiji and how it influenced and affected social and ecological resilience. Under Dr Nadine Heck’s supervision, his postdoc research on the NSF-Belmont funded NO CRISES project is aimed at elucidating how conflicts in coastal fisheries in Hawai’i emerge and collaboratively work with stakeholders to identify and assess options for mitigation.
