Small Businesses

The Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC) is the business advisory service of the UNC System. Advising and assisting regional small to mid-sized businesses is essential to the growth and economic vibrancy of communities in eastern North Carolina. According to data from the Census Bureau, there were 5.6 million employer firms in the United States in 2016. Firms with fewer than 500 workers accounted for 99.7 percent of those businesses and firms with fewer than 20 workers made up 89.0 percent. At ECU, our SBTDC consistently leads the state in helping entrepreneurs start up new businesses by providing critical consultative services to existing businesses to help launch new product lines, make efficiency gains, reduce expenses, drive new partnerships, and assist with securing funding in the form of investment capital (including loans), grants and contracts. We are always ready to help our business community to thrive in an ever-changing economic landscape.
